Am I the only one bothered by this?
See, the other day I was watching The Terminator. No, the movie in and of itself doesn’t bother me…it’s one of the few Schwarzenegger movies I can really watch. No, the movie is fine. But what bothers me comes from watching the documentary on the special edition DVD. There are a few documentaries, interviews with cast and crew, etc. Now, James Cameron says that one of the big selling points for him, what made him think the movie had a shot, was when Ahnuld came in with his eyebrows shaved and his hair cut.
He’s right. Once the movie gets going and you see that muscle-bound Austrian cyborg on the prowl, it looks damn creepy. But what bothers me is the progression of this. Look at the movie again sometime and tell me what you see. The movie starts with a normal looking pumped Austrian cyborg stealing a thug’s clothes. He’s got a normal haircut, normal eyebrows, everything. But then an hour into the movie, after he’s found the real Sarah Connor and was thwarted by Reese, he suddenly is seen looking for them in a police car. His eyebrows are gone, and his hair is different.
At first I chalked it up to fire. Terminator 2 neglects the fact that hair burns, and so I figured the original movie took this into account. Then I kept watching and I realized something. The damned cyborg is seen without eyebrows BEFORE he's in a fire! Such a minor detail, and it bugs the hell out of me.
When the police nab Reese and Sarah Connor, the terminator gets away. He gets in this big car crash and limps off. Then we see him go back to his place…why does he have a place? He’s probably a squatter. Anyway, he performs the surgery on himself, we see his red eye, and he fluffs his damn hair!
Are terminators the ultimate narcissists? When the cyborg gets to 1984, does he see other thugs with no eyebrows and bizarre haircuts? Seeing this, does he emulate them? I can’t figure it out. The hair, no eyebrows…it’s like he was in a fire.
He wasn’t in a fire. We first see Arnold looking like this after he’s first encountered Sarah. He’s in the police car (as I said before) slowly moving up and down the parking lot. We see him searching…and his eyebrows are gone. After this is the chase, in which the Reese goes gunning down the road and the police are following. Ahnuld ends up crashing into a wall and his police car is destroyed. This is the point where it would make sense to say he was in a fire. But then he goes to his squatter residence and does his surgery. He still looks all funhouse mirror, and quite creepy. He goes off, lays waste to the police station, and Sarah Connor escapes yet again. So he goes back to his squatter residence…he’s looking through her address book, and I’ll be sodomized on Christmas if those eyebrows aren’t back!
I keep going, and I forget why. Can someone help me?
