Brewing beer.

Got a nice spiced ale coming up in about 6 weeks. Hopefully by then I’ll have a keg system of sorts and a place to put said keg.

It’s good times.

Sweet, sweet vindication.

They finally have opened up the official transcripts. That means all the edits have been accepted, the bill has been paid, and I’m homefree.

I expect in about 2 months to have bound copies of my dissertation (I’ll take pictures for you all).

It feels really good.

All professional ties with California are now over.

really CNN?

the Warmest Decade EVER?

I quote their headline “NASA: Last Decade was Warmest Ever” and the first line of their article “The first decade of the 21st century was the warmest ever on Earth according to data released by scientists at NASA.”

Really? Considering that the earth is over 4 billion years old, and they’ve only got data since the 1880’s, one would assume it’s safer to say “Earth is warmest since 1880s”

But nope, it doesn’t fit the narrative of holy shit the earth’s screwed we’re all going to die if they TELL THE TRUTH.

BSU library network lockdown

Holy bejeezus, it is impossible to connect to any computer/network in this library if you’re not a student or if you don’t have an ethernet cord. And if you use a computer for catalog searches, you need to sign out.

Of course, the good folk at the help desk have extra cables that they were kind enough to let me borrow to connect.

I forgot mine at home because I brought my backpack instead of my computer case.

Note to self: pack an extra cable in the backpack.

Kinda busy

Listed autographed new versions of Inanis the Hooded on amazon marketplace today (same price as the new non-autographed ones because amazon takes a huge cut; cheaper from me directly), I read up on some old english and went for a run today.

I hope to be able to run a mile without stopping by the end of january. Today I ran quite a bit of it, but had to walk to catch my breath a few times. I want to have 3 miles without stopping by March.

I think it’s definitely workable.

Running three miles without stopping is something that I think one should be able to do regardless of how much they work out…it’s one of those things which may come in handy in a pinch. That and I want to be abit more fit…not necessarily to lose weight (because each time I have THAT goal, it never works out) but to be in decent shape. And running w/o stopping over a distance is a good indicator of that.

Being ready to fight at the end of it is a better indicator. That by the April.

free time

I’ve got more than enough now. I’ve found some beginner’s resources online to pick up sanskrit, old english, old french, old norse, and latin.

Anyone want to learn these languages and start a conversation/email writing penpal situation? C’mon. It’ll be good for your brains.

Drinking Beer in a Blissful Mood

I wish I had found this article a lot sooner…it would have simplified having ONE archaelogical source to deal with rather than inferring my conclusions from weather data, my own knowledge of fermentation, and the details I could glean from encyclopedia articles on soil types.

On the other hand, it’s FANTASTIC to see my conclusions backed up by anthropologists in a journal like Current Anthropology.

well,

while waiting for work to start up again, I figure it’s time to learn me some old norse. I can muddle through with a dictionary by my side, but I’d like to have it down more than that.

It just occurred to me

That the information I’m giving out is not necessarily wise considering the cut throat ways and means of capitalism. It stands to reason that if I give out more information on how to become a more successful (which, really, at this point in time is in no way equivalent with being what most call successful) self-publisher, the more “competitors” there will be in the marketplace. More competition means more people eating up pieces of the pie.

And, as everyone knows, less pie is no good. No good at all.

Be prepared for some philosophical standpoints here.

However, here’s how I look at it: sharing knowledge is integral to good ethical behavior. If some tidbit that I have that has helped me will help someone else move a couple copies of their book, fantastic. If a person buys their book instead of mine, oh well. I’m out a dollar. They, on the other hand, are up a dollar (or more) and probably feel pretty good about themselves. And then, somewhere down the road, they will (if you’ll pardon the usage of a phrase from a movie I have not seen) “pay it forward.”

Now, some people may argue that I have no guarantee that they’d return the favor of sharing information with some one else down the road. And I would say they’re probably right. When money is involved, people tend to lose their sense of fairness, and their sense of honor. However, why should I let fears of what other people may do affect how I myself act? I can not control their behavior, I can hope (and be disappointed at times) but the moment I start to react to possibilities is the moment I stop acting in my own right.

Of course, this type of thinking doesn’t carry over to all parts of my life (I don’t walk around with a match and a hairspray bottle as a flame thrower (much)) but for ideas/knowledge/creative working, I feel the more open I am with my process the more that I can share and learn from other people. Sappy, I know, but that’s how I roll.

Now head on over to Inanis the Hooded and start learnin’ up on some self publishing techniques.

food for thought

apparently the same company that makes 3 musketeers and mars bars, makes pedigree dog food too.

I think I’ll stay with Hershey’s bars.
