2 quick movie rental reviews
Hancock: waste of money.
Hellboy 2: good times.
finished up the action items from editing, and went to sushi and a movie with some friends.
Note to people who eat sushi: stay away from things called “philadelphia rolls”…they are a horrid horrid combination of textures and should not be made…ever. They’re tuna and cream cheese. The taste isn’t so bad, but the texture? Ugh.
So, anyway, sushi is growing on me. This is the second time I’ve had legitimate sushi out here, as opposed to sushi from a grocery store.
Anyhoos, the movie we saw was Australia. It was worth the $9.50. It wasn’t brilliantly done, or anything like that, but it was enjoyable. One of the few times in the last year that I can honestly say a movie was worth the price of admission.
Got through the majority of the edits tonight in the 112 pages that have been returned to me. I’ve got some rewrites and some double checks to do tomorrow, but those should be done by noon tomorrow.
that’s what I’m thankful for.
The church needs more of them. It needs less of the wishy-washy I’m ok, you’re ok, God’s ok type of spirituality found in a lot of books lately (such as the Shack). The church needs less of the “let’s interpret the scriptures in such a way to make them inclusive.” Let’s show Christ’s love without living up to it ourselves…let’s let them know we’re broken and it’s ok!
It’s ok to be broken…once..but brokenness without real repentance is not a step towards God. It’s acceptance of your lot in life without any requirement to move away from the mess that you are. Churches which advocate this preaching from the broken places are churches that have not accepted with faith the Grace from God which fixes you. Sure it may take a while to fix, but that’s your own fault, not God’s. Human resistance is a fell thing, and to preach from that resistance instead of preaching what once was filthy is now snow clean doesn’t do anyone any favors, except the coffers of the church. And we all know where that leads.
The church, bluntly put, needs to be biblically based and nothing less.
I just finished reading The Bravehearted Gospel, and it’s a thought that came to mind. Enough of the equivocating, enough of the casual interpretation of only verses that make you feel good. Let’s return to the roots of Christianity.
Ludy advocates for a return to the masculine energy in the church…the decision making, the judging based on facts, the willingness to fight for what is correct and what is believed in. I agree. The church needs this…the church needs wolfhounds to protect the flocks.
I’m going to try get to that level.
Just received my first two chapters back from my other diss committee member, and there’s a lot of stuff to change and edit in that. This makes me pleased. What, one may ask…why in the earth would I be happy with a bunch of edits and work that needs to be done?
The answer for that is any edits/changes that need to happen are edits/changes for the better…and the better the diss is, the more satisfied I will be when it’s said and done with. So good times.
That, in addition to finishing the third chapter edits, in addition to getting through a few books for my 4th chapter, means that this weekend and next weekend are effectively burned up.
I don’t have a problem with this. It’ll get my mind of other unfortunate circumstances.
I see how things are shaping up, I attempt to sidestep the situation, I attempt to get things started that will head off the difficulty by talking to people about what should be done, I try taking proactive steps to avoid the hassle…
and no one listens. And then they’re surprised when nothing happens.
“If only there were someone to arbitrate between us, to lay his hand upon us both, someone to remove God’s rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more. Then I would speak up wihtout fear of him, but as it now stands with me, I cannot” (Job 9:33-35).
“Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died – more than that, who was raised to life – is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us” (Romans 8:33-35)
Job is one of my favorite books of the bible (it mentions dinosaurs, it’s awesome) and so I’m devoting some time this morning to solitude and reading it through again, chapter by chapter. I’m very interested to understand more fully why the friends of Job did not speak rightly of God and required sacrifices at the end. Each time I’ve read through the book, the imagery and the language have distracted me, and I get caught up in that. This time, I’m trying to be more focused. Along the way, I pick up echoes of the coming gift of Christ, like those above.
Yes, I’m skipping church to do so, but I’ve been feeling…I don’t know. Not quite dissatisfied, but maybe restless?
Sorry. Between camping last weekend, and then a (pardon the language) shitstorm that hit at the design studio, I’ve been pretty busy.
Anyway, here’s an insanely funny joke:
What is a pirate’s favorite kind of door?
A garrrrage door!
*chortle*
has been figured out, thank goodness. That’s been relatively pressing on my mind, but today I stopped by the financial aid office, they had mailed out the packet, and everything’s good to go.
*phew*
Looks like the person I voted for, first name noneya, last name bidness, didn’t take it last night. Ah well.
Time to buckle in for more of the same. Those peruvian shamans did their job TOO well!
