uff da.

saw my first christmas commercial today.

I’m amazed they held off until after halloween, actually. Considering that Kmart had their christmas trees up last time I was home (SEPTEMBER 21st people! that’s NOT RIGHT), I suppose television had practiced some restraint.

At Barnes & Noble, we put up most of our Christmas displays last Thursday. In a couple of weeks we’ll probably start with the endless Christmas music. I know it started before Thanksgiving last year because I had to field complaints from customers.

What I hate most about all of this is that I like Christmas, but I’m burned out on it by the time it comes around because I’ve been constantly exposed to it for almost two months in advance. Stupid capitalism ruins everything.

I had the same problem as Amber when I worked at Borders. It was so hard to be in the Christmas/Holiday spirit when they’ve been playing the nondenominational holiday music (there are only so many songs they can play that fall into that category) for months. And I love Christmas, too.

Then again, I went to Bronner’s Christmas Store in Frankenmuth where it’s Christmas all the time–all year long. Went there during August one year. Yup, still Christmas. Think what it would be like to work there all the time.

Apparently our national economy is so tattered and torn that pushing the season earlier and earlier is the only way the stores believe they can make a buck.

It’s so sad…takes so much of the joy out of the whole thing.

I have to restrain myself at this time of year. I really, really want to put up our x-mas tree now, but Jer-Bear says I can’t until after thanksgiving. Man! I could go for some holiday music and a spikee eggnogg right about now.

Yup. It’s true. Marketing for Christmas is unleashed on the first of November.

I agree with all you other retail slaves out there. Once you have worked in a store that decorates months in advance and plays the same satalite station of “holiday songs” you can’t help but hate the holidays. Once you get away from that, it is much easier to love them again. Hell, it took me 5+ years away from Food 4 Less to realize it.

As a side note, I bet every single artist has sung Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer or Jingles Bells at one low point in their career. Country, Rap, Rock, Christian, you name it-they have ALL done it.

This year I am with Jess. I am ready to put the loot out on display and have some eggnog.
