Let’s talk video game music
Yes, I’m so much of a nerd that I’ve bought a video game soundtrack(Chrono Cross) and preordered the newest Castlevania game just so I could get the promo music disc with it.
These two, Chrono Cross and Castlevania, have some of the best(dare I say it? THE BEST, there I said it) music around in the modern era. They are really stellar for the variety of the music and the sense of place that it invokes.
No other game music comes close. Don’t talk to me about craptastic music like that in WoW, or Guild Wars. And don’t talk to me about the Final Fantasy music. That stuff is made to be heard for 40-50 hours while you play the game, Chrono Cross was as well…but to a lesser extent. It mixes it up enough so that there’s variety. Castlevania games have music that changes from level to level, considering that the levels are to last about 4-5 minutes, there’s variety there too.
But it isn’t JUST about variety, it’s about a consistency. Each of the tracks invokes that “sense of place” I spoke about before. Chrono Cross, when you hear it, you can picture yourself on the tropical islands, in forest and jungles. Castlevania puts you smack dab into a 13th century castle.
This music is just classy. None of the other video games come close.
