gay marriage

this is in response to the post on jessica’s blog.

Let me say one thing first: I am definitely AGAINST the amendment currently being pushed in the state legislature(or was it senate?) whatever. The main problem with this amendment is that it is poorly worded and legally reprehensible(as pointed out by my friend dave hanson) and that it would prohibit ANY legal support for the gay community or any unions that they might eventually get. I am against that kind of language.

Now, let me say this one thing second: I am against any amendment legalizing gay marriage.

Now, I can imagine you all getting your pitchforks together and crying out for my death and my head on a pike. Hold up. let’s look at two words that are RIFE in this debate: legalizing and marriage. Legalizing=government. Marriage=religion. NEVER THE TWAIN SHALL MEET!!!! Until I rule the world in an iron theocracy, but until then this country’s supposed separation of church and state should be upheld to whatever degree it can be. Sidenote: I especially enjoy that whenever the church is lobbying congress people complain about the separation, but by God, when the state wants to impose restrictions on churches(be they of whatever faith), people somehow forget about this separation.

Anyway, back to my point: marriage is a religious institution. But wait, Froyd,(i hear people argue) marriage was around before religion! LIE. Marraige was around before christianity, yes, but before religion in general? As a mythology student, I cannot believe that. This is what the argument hinges on really, about gay marriage and government: I cannot, for any reason, support government imposition on an institution that is central to many religions, and which(for the majority of them) the idea of gay marriage is abhorrent. I use abhorrent because that is how these churches view gay marriage. Because, and I know this is slippery slope(but seriously, when has this ever NOT been the case with the government?), once this imposition happens, what next for government and religion? A state mandated attendance? For those of you who don’t think that would happen, look at the senator pushing forward the above amendment. I wouldn’t put it past her. So for the separation of church and state, for the protection of the religious aspect and FREEDOM of the religions to practice as they wish and not how the government wants them to, I am against a gay marraige amendment.

Now I am not only against any PRO gay marraige amendment, but I am against any ANTI gay marriage amendment. It should not be up to the government to define marriage. marriage, as I pointed out, is an institution that has its own definitions depending on whichever faith. For the government to define precisely what marraige is precludes any religious freedom of the institution. Gay marriage is something that SHOULD NOT be decided in the government, but in the churches, mosques, synagogues, temples, wiccan covens, what have you.

But what of the benefits that marraige gives a couple? I will, again, point out that these are benefits of legality. And I will point out that I believe the government should legalize CIVIL UNIONS for the gay community. These civil unions should allow all the tax breaks, legal protection, estate protection, what have you, that the gay community is currently lacking and that us straights have. I am NOT a fan of differences in legality dependent on your sexual preference. That is discrimination and the civil rights issue that should be pursued. Same legal rights, regardless of if a church was involved. THAT is the central issue that ought to be brought up. I think if the language changed in the debate, you’d have the separation of church and state that is sought after, and the government wouldn’t be forcing any religion to practice the way they want it to.

And then, the religious can decide amongst themselves to what degree they can interpret their holy texts, and how much can be adjusted to allow a more inclusive attitude toward the gay community.

but, under NO CIRCUMSTANCES, whether pro or antii gay marriage, should the government create any laws imposing their definition of the religious institution of marriage.

cursed

I think my old laptop at the school is cursed.

yes cursed.

YE CURSE O’ YE OLDE WINDOWS 98 LAPTOP!!! AIEEEEE!

think ye know fright? the blue screen o’ death has nothing on this!

I’ve attempted ordering memory through Asgard Computers(who DIDN’T ORDER IT on time, and when it did come in, gave it to someone else(and even then it was the wrong kind)), then through Upgradenation.com, who DID send it, but it was the wrong speed, so I sent it back to GET IT REPLACED, but they just put the money back on the card.

Fine…so I decided to splurge the extra $15 to get it from Gateway, seeing as how they’re a reputable company that I’ve never had problems EVER with ordering stuff before.

I received an email this morning about how they HOPED to have it sent out by the 24th of april, because of some unidentified problem with the order. Cursed.

I’d dump holy water on the computer to cure it, but I think that would cause more problems than it would solve. I mean, windows can’t react well to that level of sanctity.
