Camping

So I was flipping through the Reader’s Digest this month, and they showed a camper trailer. and I had the insane need suddenly to go camping. I’ve sorta always wanted to try camping out for more than a day.

So, this summer, that’s what I’ll be doing the weekends I’ve got off. I just don’t have any specific spots to go. I am thinking for my road trip at the end of may(I’ve got school the 22-24th, and a friend whom I’ve not seen for years will be in san fran the next couple of days, so i’m going to drive out there), and so perhaps camping wouldn’t be a bad idea. That’s how I’d like to start the summer, but then I’ve got 3 months to do stuff like this. Maybe go to Folk Fest up in winnipeg? Who knows.

Two things:
1. I need ideas for camping spots(good ones, with hiking and such) to visit during the summer(not necessarily just on the road trip)
2. I need people to join me on these little outings.

Gooseberry Falls and Tettegouche State Park — both on the North Shore. Beautiful hiking, waterfalls, lake, and silent nights.

Also on the North Shore: Split Rock Lighthouse State Park has part of the Superior Hiking Trail. We tried to ski there when we went for spring break. Eric and I go camping every year (except for last year, when we had to go to four goddamn weddings and couldn’t get any more weekends off). We hit the State Forest campgrounds. They’re usually relatively quiet. Noma Lake has little private platforms for fishing on some of the campsites, if you’re into that (and we watched a family of loons get pissed off when a deer swam across the lake). And Webster Lake has a hiking trail that connects with a bog walk.

camping is a favorite. we go all the time. I can’t help with the locations, but I can tell you my fave camping snack. Instead of roasting marshmallows, take a tube of Pilsbury Biscuts. Wrap the biscut around a roasting stick and eat with butter and honey. YUM

BWCA – there’s nothing like it.

All Hail the Winnipeg Folk Fest! Just watch out for the rabid mosquitoes and angry hippies, they make short work of you foreigners!

I was thinking about going to Folk Fest again. Haven’t been for two years and going five years in a row. I do know that the authorities have cracked down on camping "activities" there though. Not because of hippies, but because of drunken fratboy American types.

If you wanted to take a little detour on yoru California trip, Smith Rock might just be the best place I have EVER visited to camp. Otherwise, I agree with everyone else: The North Shore is pretty nice, and since it is so close it sort of makes sense. If you do decide to go to the North Shore, and would like the company, let me know, and I would gladly go play guide.
