Ok. So this morning, I called Computer services. I had two things on my agenda: 1, get my laptop set up to use the printer that faculty had to use; and 2, get my faculty email set up.

Agenda item one: “Can I get help to set up my win98 laptop to print to the 3rd floor printer? “
Answer: No. Won’t work with Win98.
“All right, can I get my WinXP laptop to work on that printer?”
Answer: Waitwait…you’ve got two of your own laptops? “Yes” Let me check.
30 seconds go by. Finally they get back on the phone. “No that won’t work. The easiest thing to do would be to check out a laptop, get the form from your dean…”
“No, I’ve already got a laptop to lug around, I don’t need another one. Anyway, I’ll cross that hurdle when I come to it. Can you activate my faculty email address?”
Answer: We don’t have you listed as a GA.

good fucking lord. Why the hell would I call you people to set up a faculty account unless I were faculty? People have been registering for my class ALL FUCKING SUMMER!!!! And why the hell would I want to check out a crappy school laptop when I’ve my own? And I know they’ve got a shortage of them, so why would they be so insistent that I take one?

update: they called with the ip address, so I can set that printer up with no problems now.

And then the meeting with the grad dean because I’m not going to be there on Thursday:
Don’t date your undergrads, because you’re a professional now. You’ve got to have at least 6 credits. We’ll help with all your graduate level work. Don’t worry about formatting thesis, if you have any questions just talk to us.

REALLY????, wow, that’s just so cool! So you’re telling me that you guys are infinitely unhelpful to actual grad students(like I was last year, when I had to find out all the above information on my own(the dating of the undergrads was the worst lesson to learn, my heart…still broken)), and unless they’ve got a GA you don’t really care?
