Stuperbowl

Again, social life cut down due to work, so I am unable to go to at least one superbowl party that I was invited to.

Surprisingly, I sort of wanted to go. I work with a bunch of police at the Hospital, and one was throwing a get together with a keg of beer, steak sandwiches, stadium seating around a big ass tv…it sounded like a blast, having a few beers with Bemidji’s finest in the off duty hours.

Ah well, missed opportunities in the pursuit of the mighty dollar, or rather in running away from bills by throwing money(a worthless commodity) at them.

Apparently, the teams are tied, 7-7 according to ESPN at this instant in time. Much as I’d love to stay up and watch(HA!) I’m going to go to the blissful state of slumber and will awake when the current action is nothing more than water cooler history.

Jacob’s Room

started and finished Jacob’s Room tonight.

one line synopsis: a novel about nothing but observations.

aside from a few neat quotes, reading this novel was akin to following a bad hypertext essay. One could make a plot outline by making a fern out square legos. There were stretches from what one could call the main narrative(which really wasn’t much), but the branches out never reached any definitive point, and rarely had much connection with anything else in the book.

And not to mention the time continuum in the book. there was none. And don’t get me started on the end. Experiment all you like with tone, plot, etc. but when you just plop us down at the end with the main character disappeared and no explaination, that’s just piss poor writing.

In wrap up, there wasn’t enough story to go for 14 chapters without a lot of meaningless fluff.

This opinion may be a bit harsh, but I read this on a site that had none of Woolf’s notes on the novel. This just goes to show that when writing, you should be able to write something that can stand up on its own, which Jacob’s Room most certainly did not.
