A response to Anarchist opinion
Jon, I really don’t know what to say about this. Other than it’s nice to see you’ve been brainwashed by the media and pundits into thinking it was the religious right that got Bush into office.
I’m of the belief that it WASN’T them mostly. It’s just that it’s so completely confusing that we’re looking for scapegoats as to why this has happened, and hey! Why not blame religion? Bush is all about religion, so let’s extrapolate from there! There are, of course, some numbers that support this, but according to this New York Times article:
“But Andrew Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center, warned against placing too much emphasis on ‘values voters.’
He noted that the percentages of voters who said they attended church once a week or opposed abortion were no greater than four years ago. In addition, a surprising 60 percent of voters said they favored some kind of legal recognition for same-sex couples, with 25 percent favoring marriage rights, and 35 percent favoring civil unions. Thirty-seven percent told pollsters that same-sex couples should not be granted any form of legal recognition.”
Also noted in the article is how evangelical christians only moved up from 71% voting to 76% voting, hardly enough to justify 3.5 million people.
Now, I’m not saying that the religious right ISN’T at fault, but it isn’t completely the problem. Let’s in addition blame MTV, the republican party, and the democratic party, for pushing to get more uninformed voters to the polls. More uninformed voters means more support for the status quo, not a willingness to change it.
