Baking Bread and Literary Criticism

I like baking bread. And I bake bread the CORRECT way, ie. from scratch, no bread machine. There is something in it, something when the loaf comes out of the oven, in the smell of the fresh baked bread, a sense of accomplishment.

A sense of creation.

It is the same reason why I write. It is something I love doing. I love creation.

I’m TRYING to read this literary criticism stuff for my masters at BSU. A program that I am not enjoying in the least. BSU is giving me hassles for no apparent reason. Anyways, back to lit crit. Literary Criticism is the exact opposite of writing, of creating.

Lit Crit is the act of tearing apart a peice of writing, ripping it to shreds. Tolkien had a good analogy of it when he was talking about Beowulf. He likened the poem to a tower, built from stones of the surrounding countryside. In criticism of the poem, and analyzation, it is much like tearing the tower down and examining each stone looking for connections between them all, when you miss the beauty and usefulness in the stones as a tower.

That’s what Lit Crit is. It is an act of destruction, and I’m not digging it.

The aforementioned passing of my friends daughter has reminded me about life, and about why I got into writing in the first place. I want to live, and while living, I want to enjoy life.

I didn’t want to go through my life in computer science because I stopped enjoying it. This is like my masters program so far. I do not enjoy it. Lit Crit is just the beginning. This may be an unfortunate side effect of being enrolled in Mythological Studies as well, I find I enjoy that much much more. This masters in english is just me putting in time until I can get it, simply to augment my myth’s phD.

But back to bread…it makes me appreciate how the food is made by eating it. Lit Crit is to English and Writing what scientists at the FDA are to food…they pick it apart, tell the ingredients and then slap it in writing form on the package. LIt Crit does that with an essay. Does either one actually enrich the subject matter? No.

Where the FDA is doing things to make sure that no one is ingesting anything they shouldn’t, Lit Crit serves no useful function.

I’m going to go eat some bread now, and later, after the lit crit class, I am going to write, to make up for the 2 and a half hours of destruction that I just went through.

my wings are dragon

hm. surprised, am I? not really.

dragon
Your wings are DRAGON wings. Massive and
covered in scales, they shimmer with strength
and magic. They are the most obvious display of
your power - though it runs equally throughout
your heart and mind. You are uncompromising and
grave, with a profound sense of justice. You
have firm ideas about what is right and what is
wrong and set out to fix what problems you can.
You realize that you are more capable of
dealing with life and evil than most, and as
such you see it as your responsibility to
protect those who cannot defend themselves. You
have existed since antiquity and as such you
are wise far beyond your years in this
lifetime. While you strive for fairness and
peace, if someone should steal from your cave
of treasure (though not all that glitters is
gold) or compromise the happiness of you or one
who is close to you - they have signed their
death warrant. You have a mighty vengeance and
will unleash it upon such people immediately
and mercilessly. Arguing with you is
useless…you rarely back down and are known
for holding firm in your beliefs. Sometimes you
feel intensely burdened with the troubles of
others…acting as a Guardian can get so
wearisome. But you never give up…you see it
as your life’s mission. Often very introverted,
you can be so smart…it’s scary. Such a
combination of intelligence, creativity, power,
beauty, and magic is often intimidating to
those around you - who are also unlikely to
understand you. Arrogant, proud, overserious,
and sometimes a bit greedy or obsessed with
whatever treasure you choose to pursue…you
have enchanted people for centuries, and will
continue to do so.
