I was surfin’ the other classmates blogs just now, and I came across Tammi’s, and saw an entry dealing with violence being portrayed in hockey games, and a current book that she’s reading.
The book seems to try and explain to women that men have a natural wild side, or passions, and “most men abandon those dreams and desires— aided by a Christianity that feels like nothing more than pressure to be a nice guy”.
I’d have to say its society more than christianity. Society has pressured christianity as much as the other way around. Go to any church in the country, and you’ll see the effects of society’s pressure to be ‘nice’. The only time the Old Testament is even brought up is to offer up the prophecies for Jesus coming into the world. Even in Sunday School, what little we get of the Old Testament is about Moses wandering around the desert for 40 years.
There is nothing of the vengeful, angry God prevalent in more than half the bible, in church nowadays. Christianity, in the parlance of our times, has lost its balls.
How do we reconcile Jesus’ words and actions with the actions of a Wrathful God of the old testament? Here is my take on it:
The Father of the triune God is the One who deals with Society, and the interactions thereof. When a society is trying to survive(as was the case during that time for Israel, the chosen people), war is acceptable, curses are acceptable, the vengeful acts of wrath upon other cultures is more than acceptable in order that the society survive and flourish. The Law is put into place as a guide for society, as outlines for how people should act.
The Son of the Triune God(Jesus), deals with the individuals. God sent Jesus to earth because people as individuals are unable to live up to the laws that guide society. Jesus allows a path to righteousness through faith, because the law is unattainable. He laid down laws for the individual, and gave forgiveness because each person is different, and the situations are different. That is why forgiveness can come to even someone who has been an adulteress many times over(can’t remember the verse right now)…because Jesus came for the individuals, because the society had been saved, though not in autonomous form, but it wasn’t destroyed as Rome could have done.
The Spirit of the Triune God(Holy Ghost), comes into play as the Entity who tries to reconcile the individual first to Jesus’ salvation, and then to the laws for Society that were laid down by God the Father. As we are sinful, the Holy Ghost continual moves us to accept forgiveness, and repent. This makes us into better people, because we become more like how God wants us to be.
Now. This brings into the picture how war can be allowed under God’s societal laws. War, if it is needed, can be ordained by God, as He did many times in the old testament. Murder in war is still a sin, and the Holy Ghost will move you to accept forgiveness. And unfortunately, I don’t have the answers to what God would do if you die with that sin on your soul, but Jesus has posited that all who accept Him are saved.
The question that I have is: Would the sin of murder in war be put forth against the Society that ordered it, rather than the individual, as the Society is the one ultimately responsible for putting the individual in the scenario where murder was required in order to survive?
Next post will be on ‘nice guys’ vs. ‘empassioned guys’, and my take on that book that started this whole talk.
